Quick Answer
An advanced overtaking timing course teaches you to calculate closure rates, spot the “gap window” of 4-6 seconds, and commit decisively. It is not about speed. It is about reading the traffic flow and knowing exactly when that gap will close.
I watched a rider on the Mysore Road yesterday. He had a beautiful Interceptor 650. Good gear. Confident posture.
But he nearly killed himself trying to pass a truck. He saw the gap. He went for it. He did not account for the oncoming car doing 90 km/h around the bend.
That is exactly why we built the advanced overtaking timing course at Throttle Angels. Not to teach you how to twist the throttle harder. To teach you when not to.
Why Most Riders Get advanced overtaking timing course Wrong
Here is the thing most riders miss. They think overtaking is about horsepower. They think it is about bravery.
It is not. It is about timing. Pure math. You have a window of 4 to 6 seconds where a gap exists. If you cannot read that window, you are gambling.
I have seen this mistake cause accidents dozens of times. A rider sees a truck ahead. They see a gap in oncoming traffic. They commit without checking if the gap is actually long enough for their bike’s acceleration curve.
On a 125cc commuter, you need more space. On a 650cc twin, you need less. But most riders use the same mental rule for every bike. That is a recipe for disaster.
The real risk is not the truck you are passing. It is the car you did not see coming from 400 meters away doing 100 km/h. That car covers 400 meters in 14 seconds. Your overtake takes 8 seconds. You think you are safe. You are not.
Last monsoon season, a student named Rohan came to us after a close call on the Bangalore-Mysore highway. He was on a Dominar 400. He said he “felt” the gap was enough. He pulled out. A Scorpio appeared from nowhere.
He swerved back. His rear wheel hit the truck’s bumper. He went down at 70 km/h. Broken collarbone. Ruined riding jacket. He told me, “I never even saw the Scorpio until it was right there.” That is the problem. You are not seeing. You are guessing.
What Actually Works on Indian Roads
Here is what I teach in the advanced overtaking timing course. You need three things before you even touch the throttle. A target. A gap. And an escape route.
First, pick your target. Not the truck. The space beyond it. Look at least 500 meters ahead. That is where your focus should be. Not the bumper in front of you.
Second, measure the gap. Here is a trick I have used for 15 years. When you see an oncoming vehicle, count how long it takes to reach you. If it takes less than 4 seconds, do not go. If it takes 6 seconds or more, you have a window.
Third, check your mirror. Not once. Twice. The second look is the one that saves you. The first look tells you if someone is there. The second look tells you how fast they are approaching.
Then commit. Do not hesitate. Hesitation is what gets you killed. If you decide to go, go. Roll on the throttle smoothly. Do not snap it. Smooth is fast.
And here is the most important part. Have an escape route. If that gap closes faster than you expected, where are you going? Do not say “I will brake.” That is not an escape route. An escape route is a specific patch of road, a shoulder, or a gap between vehicles that you can use.
“Every overtake is a negotiation with physics. You can bluff a truck driver. You cannot bluff momentum. The gap is either there or it is not. Your job is to know the difference before you commit.”

Beginner vs Trained Rider Comparison
| Aspect | What Beginners Do | What Trained Riders Do |
|---|---|---|
| Gap Assessment | Guess based on “feeling” | Count seconds to closure. Minimum 4 second window. |
| Mirror Check | One quick glance before moving out | Two checks. First for presence, second for closing speed. |
| Throttle Use | Snap open or roll off mid-overtake | Smooth roll-on. Maintain steady power through the pass. |
| Escape Plan | None. They hope the gap holds. | Identify shoulder or space between vehicles before moving out. |
| Decision Point | Commit after passing the vehicle | Decide before reaching the vehicle. Commit early or abort early. |

Indian roads are a different beast. You have trucks that drift without indicators. You have buses that stop in the middle lane. You have cows that appear from behind a bush at dusk.
The advanced overtaking timing course teaches you to adapt. On a highway like the Pune-Mumbai expressway, the surface is good. You can trust your braking. But on a state highway near Bangalore, you have potholes, gravel, and sudden patches of sand.
Here is the rule. If you cannot see the road surface where you plan to overtake, do not overtake. That patch of shade under a tree might hide a pothole deep enough to bend your rim.
And in the monsoon? Forget everything you know. Wet roads double your stopping distance. Triple it if you have worn tyres. I tell every student: if it is raining, add 50% to your gap calculation. If it is pouring, do not overtake at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is an advanced overtaking timing course?
It is a focused training module that teaches you to calculate gap windows, read traffic patterns, and execute overtakes with precision. It is not about speed. It is about timing and decision-making.
How long does it take to master overtaking timing?
Most riders see a 60% improvement in decision-making after a single 4-hour session. True mastery takes about 500 kilometers of guided practice on different road types.
Can I take this course if I ride a small bike?
Absolutely. In fact, small bike riders benefit more because they need tighter timing. We teach you to work with your bike’s acceleration curve, not against it.
Is this course only for highway riding?
No. We cover highway, city, and ghat section overtaking. Each environment has different rules. City overtaking is about lane splitting and reading auto-rickshaw movements. Ghat sections are about blind curves and engine braking.
How much does Throttle Angels training cost?
Our courses start at competitive rates with flexible packages. Call Rajkumar at 9535350575 or Arun at 8169080740 for current pricing and batch schedules in Bangalore and Pune.
Look, I have been riding for over two decades. I have made every mistake you can imagine. I have misjudged gaps. I have been forced onto the shoulder. I have had to brake hard and pray.
The advanced overtaking timing course exists so you do not have to learn the hard way. It is not about being faster. It is about being smarter. And on Indian roads, smart is what keeps you alive.
